Player Trips
During the offseason, NBA players continue to travel the globe to host community outreach and philanthropic work. Working in partnership with community organizations and NGOs, players have given back to communities worldwide, including their hometowns, with projects ranging from funding job skills training for at-risk youth to spending time with children at orphanages. By using the game of basketball as a tool for social change, these player trips have provided people worldwide with a once-in-a-lifetime experience while providing resources and relief for tomorrow.
Amar’e Stoudemire/Zee Community Foundation Partnership
Phoenix Suns forward Amar’e Stoudemire traveled to Sierra Leone in partnership with the Sierra Leone government to visit with the Zee Community Foundation. Amar’e donated $50,000 to fund the rehabilitation of water wells and create a new school to provide Sierra Leone’s youth with educational resources and opportunities.
Tenis Para Niños, created by The Charlie Villanueva Foundation (CVF), provides quality footwear for those children in need in the Dominican Republic. Thanks to partners Crocs™, Feed The Children, UNICEF, NBA Cares, and the Elliott Foundation, the program donated 30,000 pairs of Crocs™ shoes to those in need.
Peja Stojakovic’s Project in Greece
In partnership with the International Orthodox Christian Charities (IOCC), New Orleans Hornets forward Peja Stojakovic provided mobility assistance to more than 180 disabled people in Thessaloniki, Greece.
Yao Ming Foundation in China
In June 2008, Houston Rockets center Yao Ming announced the launch of The Yao Ming Foundation. His $2 million donation created the foundation to help rebuild Chinese schools devastated by the earthquake that his China in May 2008.
Jordan Farmar Israeli-Palestinian Camps
Lakers' guard Jordan Farmar traveled to Israel in August 2008 to run basketball camps for Israeli and Palestinian children in association with the Peres Peace Center. The camps brought Israeli and Palestinian children together through basketball to create a foundation for peaceful relations between them for years to come.
Boris Diaw’s Foundation
Through his Foundation, Bobcats forward Boris Diaw adopted an orphanage called the “Children’s Empire” in Dakar, Senegal in 2006. To date, he has provided the orphanage of 40 children with beds, kitchen appliances, and carpeting as well as agreed to cover the cost of food for two years.
