Tulsa 66ers Hang Tough, Drop to Iowa

TULSA, Okla., Nov. 26, 2010 – The Tulsa 66ers had four score in double figures and Cole Aldrich posted eight points and four rebounds but were unable to hold off the Iowa Energy, dropping the contest by a 123-111 final Friday evening inside the Tulsa Convention Center.

Leading 92-89 heading into the fourth quarter, Iowa outscored Tulsa by a 31-22 margin to take the first victory of the back-to-back set between the two teams.

“Give Iowa credit, they are a great team and they showed it tonight,” Tulsa head coach Nate Tibbetts said. “Our team will learn from tonight and I expect us to bounce back tomorrow. We showed some positive signs and we will look to build off of those tomorrow.”

Larry Owens and Zabian Dowdell each scored 22 points and tallied six assists for the 66ers (1-2), followed by Robert Vaden with 19 points and Tweety Carter with 18 points. Owens added eight rebounds, including six offensive.

Othyus Jeffers paced the Energy (4-0) offense with 32 points on 9-17 shooting. Chris Lofton (28) Courtney Sims (22), Kyle Weaver (20) and Shy Ely (15) also scored in double digits.

Tulsa trailed 24-19 with 2:45 to go in the first period before going on a 10-2 run to end the quarter to lead 29-26. Owens posted eight first quarter points to pace the 66ers and Dowdell pitched in seven.

Tulsa would lead by as many as 11 points in the second quarter and ended the half leading 62-56 despite the Energy connecting on 23 of 30 first half free throws. The offensive point total marked the highest of the season for the 66ers in a half.

“Iowa came in and competed and challenged us all night,” Tibbetts said. “Our guys will be ready tomorrow night. Hopefully this is an eye opener for us.”

The 66ers and Energy will complete the back-to-back set tomorrow evening at 7 p.m. inside the Tulsa Convention Center. Fans can take advantage of a special package that includes a lower level ticket, hot dog and a drink for just $10.
